Art Club
The St Catherine’s Art Club offers learners a space where they can express their creative side in an informal setting, whether it be through painting, drawing, digital art or even poetry. Learners can attend workshops on different art styles and techniques, which they then get to practise and discuss. Exhibitions and outings give learners the opportunity to showcase their work and broaden their horizons.
Art Club is the perfect place to meet new people and engage in group work, but individual expression is also encouraged.
The words of famous Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei, perfectly summarise the Art Club’s philosophy: “Life is art. Art is life. I never separate it.”
Choir
Our choir, is going from strength to strength. They participate in various choir competitions and are always highly placed. The main School Choir plays a leading role in school ceremonies and participates in festivals, concerts and competitions.
Their repertoire is wide and ranges from difficult and challenging classical works to popular songs and songs from musicals.
Drama and Production
Every student has an opportunity to take part in our House Plays/Production. House Plays /Productions are a highlight of the school calendar. Although they are held in the third term, preparations and rehearsals already begin in February. The producers, with the assistance of an appointed teacher, co-ordinate auditions, rehearsals and dress rehearsals. There is a lot of scope for learners to participate either onstage or backstage as a member of the technical crew.
First Aid
All Grades from Grades 7-12 are welcome to be part of the first aid team. First aiders are encouraged to do levels to help in their first aiding. First aiders do hours of first aiding throughout the year in the various sports divisions that the school offers.
First aiders are encouraged to qualify themselves on different levels. The first aid learners assist at all events throughout the year, earning them hours for accolade achievements.
Photography Club
SCC has an active, exciting digital photography club where girls are taught the techniques and best practice of creating, editing and retouching photographs. The girls have many opportunities, throughout the year, to take photographs at school events and sporting activities.
This is St Catherine’s termly digital publication which reports on school news and activities, includes articles written by learners and teachers as well as sharing fun information about the day-to-day of our school The content is written by learners and supervised by teachers.
Public speaking
Public speaking is an extremely popular and successful activity at St Catherine’s Convent. Outstanding communication skills have set great thinkers and leaders apart. The advancement of these skills is a critical investment in developing young women of today. During the first term each year, at least one team per grade from Grade 8 to 12 is entered into the High Schools’ Public Speaking Festival Competition. Each team is trained by a member of staff and the girls are able to learn the skills of communicating with an audience, working in a group and writing meaningful speeches. Our Public Speaking teams are ranked in the top 5 in Gauteng and have won the junior section of the competition twice. Our Trophy Team and Best Individual Speaker have reached the finals no fewer than 4 times. This is a phenomenal achievement as the competition comprises around 100 schools and 3000 speakers annually.
Internal best speaker
The school holds an annual internal public speaking competition, where each competitor is encouraged to hone her skills, and the standard of speaking is exceptional.
The SCC Youth Club is a youth-led activity. It is created by the youth, for the youth, where all learners are welcome. It provides a safe and supportive environment for girls to come together to grow in faith, talk openly about God, and support one another, with the guidance of the Youth Leader. The club meets to read and reflect on Scripture, discuss faith-based topics relevant to their lives, and strengthen their spiritual journey together. The club also proudly represents the school by participating annually in the Catholic Schools Office’s, Bible Quiz against other Catholic schools.
Technical Events’ Crew
At St Catherine’s Convent we acknowledge that not every learner desires to be on the stage and that some learners thrive better in the vital backstage role. St Catherine’s has a dedicated group of learners who are members of the Technical Events’ Crew.
The Technical Events’ Crew receive specialised training on all the equipment that they will be required to operate and play a vital role in the smooth running of all extra-curricular activities.
True Blue Environment and Recycling Club
The Environment and Recycling Club at our school encourages learners to become responsible stewards of their world through hands-on environmental action. Members organise meaningful activities such as placing recycling bins in every classroom and creating awareness posters to ensure waste is sorted correctly. The club also leads community clean-up projects as well as collaborating with the Art Club to transform recycled materials into creative artworks for exhibition.
