On Friday 13 March 2026, our very talented high school Choir sang their way to The Roodepoort Theatre, where they participated in Round 1 of the National Eisteddfod Academy Young Performer Awards competition. The competition includes talents of many forms such as acting, dancing and poetry, but our girls serenaded the audience with their melodious voices. The girls sang a uniquely harmonious rendition of, “Ndikhkhele Bawo” led by their Choir conductor. Although the competition in the NEA Young Performer Awards Competition was tough, our girls stand a strong chance of making it into the semi-finals and -judging by the approval of the audience and the other competitors, – we aren’t the only ones who think so!  As amazing as their performance was, we must commend all the hard work that took place behind the scenes.   Every Wednesday after school from 2:30pm – 4:30pm is dedicated to shaping the girls’ voices and even polishing some dance moves to elevate their already wonderful performance! We are beyond proud to have such wonderful artistic recognition for St. Catherine’s Convent! Performing in the Choir is one of the most exhilarating experiences of one’s life – especially surrounded by talented and supportive ladies. Part of what makes the Choir so enjoyable are the bonds and friendships formed in between practices, bus-rides and competitions. Although they aren’t seen on stage, these bonds carry the warmth behind every performance, and are the fundamental essence of a choir. Choir truly is a holistic extra-curricular activity: building one’s confidence, talents and social skills. So, in support of the Choir, we have our fingers crossed in anticipation of the NEA young Performer Awards competition and we wish our girls the best of luck – their talent has gotten them this far, and we know it’ll take them even further!
