A twist in the review

On 15 August, the SCC drama girls put on three magical plays in this year’s production: “A Twist in the Tale”. The hall was packed with an excited audience with no empty seat in sight. Throughout the night, laughs, gasps and giggles were heard, thanks to the aspiring actresses who have been working tirelessly under their director, Mrs Walstra.

“How (not) to be a wizard” was a playful and humorous production which delivered a fresh take on the classic wizard-in-training storyline. With witty dialogue and charmingly clumsy characters, “How (Not) to be a wizard” showed a series of disastrously funny job interviews by aspiring teachers hoping to be employed by a certain magical school. The young actors brought energy and enthusiasm to their roles, especially “Invisible Jacob”, who stole the show. The creative use of simple props and effects added to the magic of the show.

A bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic tale, “Romeo and Juliet: Vampires vs Werewolves” turned the age-old feud between the Montagues and Capulets into a howlarious supernatural rivalry. With Romeo as a brooding werewolf and Juliet as a fierce vampire caught in the middle of their families’ ancient battle, this play captivated the audience. The choreography of the fight scenes was a highlight, as were the appearances of Michael Jackson and Paris, the very sparkly vampire.

The last play of the night, “Princess Alexandra is Perfectly Fine”, flipped the classic fairy tale formula on its head with a princess who is more than ready to handle whatever life throws at her – from not wanting to get married, to falling head-over-heels for Prince Dylan (who did not exactly turn out to be Prince Charming). The cast delivered standout comedic performances, from the uptight King and Queen, to the royal advisors who seemed more confused than wise and, of course, the charming but no-nonsense Dragon Slayer. The witches had everyone in stitches with their brilliant portrayal. This final play served as a wonderful end to the incredible night.

From the spellbinding misadventures in “How (Not) to be a wizard”, to the fang-tastic showdown in “Romeo and Juliet: Vampires vs. Werewolves”, and the hilarious twists in “Princess Alexandra is Perfectly Fine”, the performances sparkled with energy and originality. As the curtains closed on the final act, it was clear that the SCC drama girls had created a night full of unforgettable moments, leaving the audience eagerly anticipating their next theatrical adventure.
